Abstract

The increasing global shortage of seafarers has become a critical challenge for the maritime industry, demanding a transformation of maritime human resource management systems. This issue is exacerbated by slow recruitment processes, mismatched competencies, and manual crew documentation procedures. This study aims to analyze the role of digital transformation through e-Crewing in enhancing the efficiency of maritime HR management as a strategic solution to reduce the global seafarer shortage. The research stages include problem identification and industry needs assessment, collection of quantitative and qualitative data, analysis of e-Crewing integration within crew management processes, and evaluation of the system’s impact on recruitment and administrative performance. A mixed-methods approach was applied, involving questionnaires distributed to 120 respondents, in-depth interviews with 10 crewing managers, and analysis of company operational documents. The findings show that e-Crewing implementation increases recruitment efficiency by 38%, reduces administrative errors by 52%, and accelerates certificate verification through e-Certification integration by 41%. Furthermore, 87% of respondents reported that e-Crewing enhances transparency of seafarer competencies and expands international recruitment access. The study concludes that e-Crewing significantly optimizes maritime HR management and serves as a strategic solution to address the global seafarer shortage while strengthening the competitiveness of shipping companies.
